For some time I have been wanting to write a blog about the difference between newborn lifestyle sessions at your home and posed newborn studio sessions, as some of my clients struggle to choose which is the right option for them.
The examples above show the general feel of the different styles, the first is posed, wrapped and studio lighting is used in my home studio to photograph baby. Generally baby is asleep for most of the shots to allow them to be posed comfortably and easily.
In the second photo the baby is photographed in her own cot. No formal posing is used and normally natural light from the baby's nursery is the only light I would use (whenever possible). This gives the opportunity for me to capture the day to day memories of your baby in their home.
Again as the samples show above the first photo is posed in front of a plain background, perfect as a portrait photo for framing and displaying in your home. The second photo shows the family in the babies nursery, allowing me to capture a more natural setting and document the memories of those first few days at home.
With the two above images the first one was taken in my studio, with controlled lighting. The second photo was taken in a bedroom at the family home using only natural light. - So these type of portrait shots can still sometimes be achieved (dependant on lighting and adequate space.)
Why choose a lifestyle newborn session?
There are many reasons to choose a "lifestyle" (at home) newborn session. It may be that you want to capture your baby's first home & nursery and you would like baby photographed in more natural outfits and poses.
You may also feel more comfortable in your own home and so may siblings who can also be photographed reading with you, playing in their room as well as interacting with the baby.
Posed photos are still optional in lifestyle sessions. Wrapping and posing can still normally be achieved in photos at your own home, using the master bedroom bed, or as long as there is some clear floor and wall space I can usually get some more posed photographs if those are requested. See examples below.
Why choose studio newborn photographs?
There are many reasons why you may choose to have studio newborn photographs. - If your home has limited space, is in the process of being re-decorated or if you are staying with family or in other temporary accommodation.
If you don't want to worry about tidying up for a photographer to come round and take photos, or if you would prefer to have posed photographs for framing as opposed to natural photographs.
Studio photographs can still include more natural clothing and less posing if preferred, and of course siblings are welcome at the studio too!
I hope for any of you struggling to choose which type of session is best for you this short blog may have been some help to guide you.
No matter what type of session you choose with Michelle Cordner Photography I am very flexible, so please discuss with me any wishes or concerns you have and exactly what you would like from your newborn session, so the photographs are ones you will cherish for years to come.
